Beretta's SO9 was the company's top-of-the-line sidelock through 2003. Until the SO10 debuted, you could not buy a finer O/U from Beretta, which is essentially the same as saying, “anywhere”. The SO9 a true inherently reliable pin-mounted sidelock design with a unique, high, dual bolt locking system oriented along and located above the top bore axis, producing an ultra slim receiver. The light, streamlined receiver has more than enough strength to handle firing stress, and results in exceptional balance and handling. Each SO9, sized appropriately for gauge, was built to customer specifications, and, highly embellished by master engravers. This specimen, covered with a dense scroll pattern signed by G. Weighing a dainty 5.9 lbs, this Italian-built SO9 is a true side-lock crafted from the ground up for both elegance and performance. Expertly finished in Beretta's rich blue-black except at the jeweled monobloc, the 20g 28” barrels have 2 ¾” chambers. The 3/8” top rib is patterned, and mounts a silver front bead. The forged nickel-chome-moly steel receiver sports a coin-silver finish, exquisitely engraved by Bertasi with a dense scroll pattern. Engraving covers all surfaces, including the tangs, trigger guard, and action lever. The single trigger is mechanical, the gun is fitted with ejectors, and the tang safety with gold-inlay indicator is manual. The wood is top quality, matched, beautifully figured, select European walnut, enhanced by the lustrous hand-rubbed finish. The stock features a straight wrist ending in a beautifully checkered, natural wood shoulder plate. Checkering is of similar quality on the grip and fore end. Chokes are fixed, set at IMK/LMSK, .0007”/0.003” constriction, respectively, in 2011 by Briley, Houston's world-class shotgun shop (work order included). The hard case is a Beretta neat's-leather-covered hard 1-gun hard case with accessory compartments and key. Beretta built this SO9 in Italy as a bespoke custom gun for a discriminating sportsman!
Part of an estate liquidation, this SO9 (s/n E955xxB) is in NRA (mod) Excellent condition, estimated overall orginal finish about 97%. Although previously shot, it is clean and well lubricated. The receiver is essentially100%. Screws are timed but show no slot wear. Barrel finish is about 96%. Above wood finish is a rich satin blue-black although 2 pinpoint flakes show on the top tube about 2” behind the muzzle on the left, and a light scrape appears on the underside of the lower tube just in front of the fore-end. Under the fore-end wood there is a trace of finish wear at the contact points typical of O/U's, but this is remarkably light due to careful use and highly precise construction. Chambers and bores are in mirror-bright Excellent condition. Functionally, the gun is extremely tight, and it breaks down and comes together smoothly. Extractors, triggers, and safety work properly. The wood finish still shows its original luster although several light handling scuffs and scratches are visible in oblique light, primarily on the stock. Most obvious is dent on the right stock face. Checkering looks entirely intact. The butt cuff and case are in Very Good condition with a few honest scuffs on outside surfaces. Accessories appear as new. You'll have a tough time finding an SO9 20g in this kind of condition elsewhere, so act fast!
