LUDWIG BOROVNIK’S BEST QUALITY SIDE LOCK EJECTOR O/U 9.3X74R DOUBLE RIFLE CA. 1980.
Ludwig Borovnik, Bahnhofstraße 7 | 9170 Ferlach | Austria, is a world-renown gunmaker and one that is arguably the finest of that fraternity of best makers in Ferlach, a pantheon of the best gun makers in Europe.
This classic double rifle has 24 ¼” ejector barrels (automatic ejectors) made from high tensile Böhler special steel with Borovnik proofs, fitted with a ramp front and express rib rear sight.
The action locks up with the tried and true Purdey double underlug system as well as the powerful and proven full Kersten crossbolt locking into the two holes in the barrel flanges.
The full seven-pin side locks, with cocking indicators, have the finest scroll hand-engraving executed by a Master Engraver but as is the practice in Austria and Germany, the artisans do not sign their work. The meticulous engraving continues over the bolstered frame, the top and bottom of the receiver, the top tang, the checkered hold-open top lever, and the trigger bow. Just examine the incredible engraving and all the engraved screw heads. Notice also the action screw has a locking screw, a true sign of a hand-made gun.
The blued components are the barrels, the express rib, the sights, the action lever, the automatic safety, the trigger bow, the extended lower tang, and the sling swivels. The sidelocks and the receiver, the top tang, and the Deeley & Edge forearm release are all finished French coin finish.
Double triggers are finished in gold and the forward trigger is a set trigger.
The stock work is as amazing as the metal work. Made of 5X fancy English walnut, the stock with its classic comb, and the three-piece forearm are emblazoned with interlocking black and brown marble-cake grain, reminiscent of that found on Fabbri shotguns, and if that isn’t enough, the checkering was done by a master with fancy fish scale fully wrapping around the forearm by meeting at two points and carved leaf floral borders. The open pistol grip has a “chin strap” and is fitted with a horn cap with an engraved screw. The stock has a European or pancake cheekpiece with a sculptured shadow line. Measurements are 14 ¼” pull from front trigger to checkered horn buttplate with 1 ½” drop at comb and 2 ½” drop at heel.
Condition: This rifle is near mint showing little use. It retains all the blue on the barrels and blued components and all the French coin finish on the frame and side locks. Bores are mint and the rifle remains mechanically perfect . Weight 6 pounds, 12 ounces without scope.
Note: The rib is inscribed, “Rust Chasse Mulhouse” for the great Rust – Mulhouse annual Hunt, a competition between the two towns, Rust and Mulhouse, in France. The word chasse means hunt. Several rifles, the number is unknown, were bespoken from the maker, to accommodate the party for this annual aristocratic hunt.
