Description:
This is a very interesting WW2 M1 Helmet and liner formerly owned by a 1st Lt. of the 36th Infantry Division. It is a fixed bale model with a front seam. The shell has the white painted bar of a 1st Lt. and the hand painted insignia of the division painted on each side, a blue arrowhead with a "T" inside of it. The 36th Infantry was also known as the "Panther Division" or "Lone Star Division" as it was part of the Texas Army National Guard. Formed in 1917, the 36th Infantry fought in WW1 and WW2. In WW2 the 36th Infantry saw a lot of combat, first in the Italian Campaign, then in Southern France into Germany. The 36th was even recognized as a liberation unit for its work securing the sub camps of the Dachau concentration camp system. The inside of this M1 Helmet has the previous owners serial number painted under the brim "36002016". According to the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration the Army serial number belongs to William M. Gerhardt, a 1st Lieutenant in the 142nd Infantry regiment which was part of the 36th Infantry Division. This helmet and liner appear to be original and in good condition overall. The shell has one broken bale and the chinstraps have been removed. The original paint is still intact but shows wear and tear that you would expect on a combat worn helmet. As you can see from the pictures, it has a very nice aged patina to it and should display nicely. The liner is fully intact and still has the original chinstrap attached to it. The webbing and leather components show some age and wear but still look good. The metal components show rust in places which has stained the webbing in places. The liner is maker marked in the crown.
