This is a late Farmingdale, NY made rifle just before the company moved to Big Timber, Montana. The "Gemmer" is named for John Gemmer who purchased the famed Hawken Shop in St. Louis, Missouri in 1865. Aside from continuing to make the Hawken style heavy half-stock percussion rifles of mountain man fame, Gemmer also was known for converting early cartridge rifles into "Hawken" style sporter. He is known to have used Trapdoor Springfield actions, Sharps, Remington and Spencer actions fitted with octagon barrels, two-piece stocks with "keyed" forends, barrels fitted with under rib and thimbles to a hold cleaning rod. Typically stocks had cheek pieces and heavy curved crescent butt plates. They are considered some of the most handsome sporters ever made. Shiloh no longer catalogs the "Gemmer Model" and finding one today is very difficult. This example has a 30" standard octagon barrel with cleaning/wiping rod and double keyed forend. The rear sight is a long and fancy buckhorn with elevator bar. Front sight is a Rocky Mountain blade. The tang is factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight. The barrel finish is a matte blue which nicely flows with the browned forend cap, barrel wedge escutcheons and butt plate with long toe piece. The action and lever is nicely case colored and the screws are polished and fire-blued. It is fitted with double set triggers. The butt stock has extra fancy dense/burl walnut and is fitted with a cheek piece. The bore is perfect and overall this rifle appears to have seen little if any use. Weighs just under 11 1/2 lbs. One of the most beautiful and unusual of all the Shilohs ever cataloged and now about impossible to find.
