Classic late Indian Wars infantry rifle. These were actually used right up to and after the Spanish American War. This is a late 1879 Model just before the Model 1884. Has the correct rear sight with slotless screws. Breech block dated 1873 and all correct Eagle motif and Springfield marked lock plate and U.S. marked butt plate. The barrel retains nice blue that is showing light age only. Cleaning rod shows some pitting toward the tip. Mottled gray lock and breech block with some nice blue on the bottom of the trigger guard. Fine cartouche in wrist of stock and circle P behind the lower tang. Generally fine and solid stock with one small ding/wear spot on the left upper wrist and a chip out of the cleaning rod channel just behind the front sling swivel- minor. Bore is bright and excellent. Fine appearance. These are still a bargain as collector firearms or shooters as Springfield quality was second to none and these can be had for less than most Italian replicas!
