This is a totally unique one of a kind piece made to compete with the Winchester Repeating Arms Company which by this time was manufacturing the Model 1866 and had just introduced the Model 1873. The patent, number 137392 of April 1st, 1873, was purportedly purchased by the firm purely to halt any chance or production. Alfred Swingle was born in Maryland in 1818 and moved to San Francisco where he partnered with Frank A. Huntington to develop new and innovative firearms patents including another lever action design in 1874 and a revolving magazine in 1880. This full size operational (non-firing) prototype measures 12 5/8" long overall and is of heavy finely machined brass construction with a partial iron barrel and magazine tube. The design loads the rifle through the bottom of the breechblock into the magazine tube. Operating the lever once forward and back drops the breech while operating it again loads a cartridge into the breechblock chamber and carries it up into position ready to fire. A button safety on the hammer is pressed in order to pull the hammer back and the rifle is ready to fire. Once fired the process is repeated expending the spent casing ahead of the lever as a new cartridge is loaded. Winchester's design accomplishes this all in one step as opposed to two however the point of this action was to provide a safer design. The model operates and cocks as described and is very well made. It retains a wonderfully untouched dark mustard patina overall and is accompanied by copies of the original patent which depicts and describes this very piece in detail. An extremely rare item, the only of it's kind, which would make a choice display among even the most advanced Winchester collection. Provenance: From the renowned O.
