Description:
This is a very clean and lightly-used Smith & Wesson Model 60 Chiefs Special Stainless .38 Special revolver manufactured in 1979.  It is 100% original and has not been improved or modified in any way.  The Model 60 Chiefs Special Stainless was first introduced in 1965 as the stainless steel version of the popular Model 37 Chiefs Special that had been produced since 1951.  The round-butt J-frame DA/SA Model 60 featured stainless steel construction, a 2" or 3" inch pinned (discontinued in 1982) barrel, a five shot fluted cylinder, fixed iron sights, and checkered Walnut grips.  The Model 60 proved to be every bit as popular as the original blued Chiefs Special, if not more so.  The Model 60 quickly earned a reputation for extreme reliability, good accuracy, and excellent durability with minimal maintenance.  While there have been multiple engineering changes over the production run, the Model 60 Chiefs Special Stainless remains in production even today, over 56 years later.  This particular example is an early "no dash" Model 60 with the sought-after pinned barrel.  It is in excellent condition overall, and has perfect mechanics.  This Chiefs Special Stainless appears to have been carried and/or fired VERY little since leaving the factory.  The stainless steel is still bright and clean, rating 97%.  The only deductions come from an extremely faint drag-line around the cylinder and some scattered tiny handling marks, none of which detract much from the clean overall look of the gun.  There is no visible pitting or staining on this gun.  The bore in the 2" inch barrel is mirror-bright and pristine, as-are the 5 chambers of the cylinder.  The rifling in this Chiefs Special is sharp and strong from the forcing cone to the crown of the muzzle.  All of the factory markings are crisp and clean, and the alloy hammer and trigger are in excellent condition.  The original factory grips on this Smith are in excellent condition and match each other perfectly.  Both grip panels are free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major dings/damage.  The checkered panels are still crisp and clean, the S&W medallions are still intact, and both grip panels perfectly fit the gun.  The right-hand grip panel is serial-numbered on the reverse to match the gun, as-is correct for this vintage S&W.  The action on this Chiefs Special is smooth, slick, and perfectly "in time" no matter how it is operated.  The cylinder lock-up is excellent and the trigger is quite good, particularly in single-action operation where it breaks cleanly with light pressure and no excessive travel.  All of the controls are in perfect working order, just like the day it left the factory back in 1979.  If you have been looking for a very lightly-used and clean Chiefs Special Stainless for your collection this pinned-barrel no-dash Model 60 would be an excellent choice.  With the prices steadily rising on these Model 60's seemingly every month it should continue to be an excellent long-term investment.
