*** New Price $6500.00****

In 1835 and 1836, the American inventor and industrialist Samuel "Sam" L. Colt (1814–1862) patented a revolutionary type of multishot pistol that is still used today. This revolver is an example of the workmanship that has kept Colt firearms popular spanning the centuries.

Sam Colt sold 50 of his M-1851 revolves to the U.S. Navy in June of 1856 and an additional 50 revolvers in May of 1857. In September of that year, the Navy finally placed a large order for M-1851 revolvers. They purchased 2,000 (less the ones that had been previously ordered), which were delivered starting in November of 1857. These guns appear in the 55500 to 62000 serial number range. The first 615 were delivered for inspection at the Norfolk Naval Yard on November 9, 1857. The next batch of 667 were delivered to the Boston Naval Yard on December 6, and rest of the guns were delivered to the New York Navy Yard later that same month.

We present a Colt 1851 Navy Conversion in .38 caliber, with a 7 1/2 inch barrel and wood grips. Patent dates still clear on the receiver:

- PAT. JULY, 25, 1871 -
- PAT. JULY, 2, 1872 -

Address line of Sam L Colt on the barrel is still visible, but faded. Several markings on firearm include an Anchor under the barrel, USN on the butt of the grip and possibly inspector's name (THOMPSON) on butt and barrel.

Manufacture date of 1856. "Based on the serial number of this revolver it would have been shipped to the New York Navy yard November 1857."

Metal is in good condition for age, marks and wear as expected for a firearm that has seen so much history. A pleasing brown patina is present on the finish. The wood grips have been repaired fairly crudely, but we think it adds a bit of character to this gun, the workmanship shows this firearm needed to be used and functionable and not left behind in the safe.

This is the conversion model. A very historical, beautiful piece and a wonderful addition to any collection.

Please see photos for further condition details, and we are always happy to answer questions.
