Description:
This rifle, designed by Alfred von Kropatschek was adopted by the French Navy to replace the Chassepot needle-fire rifle, the single shot metallic cartridge rifle which had been adopted by the French Army. The M1878 was the first commercially successful Kropatchek. It incorporates the basic design of the Chassepot/Gras bolt and receiver system mated with a tubular magazine, connected by a "spoon" elevator which pivoted at the rear to bring a fresh cartridge into alignment. This system of cartridge lifter was the key to the Kropatchek design. The tube of the tubular magazine is made of nickel plated steel. All the rest of the metal is polished steel. Mismatched numbers. Barrel, receiver assembly and bands has one set of numbers "3297", Bolt "3332" and stock/butt plate "3400". Very close, but not the same. Rifle is marked on the left side of the receiver: "Manufacture de Mr De Werndl", below: "Steyr - Autriche" and "Mle 1878 Marine". Condition: Fine plus. All metal in white, no rust or pitting. Excellent shiny barrel with strong and sharp rifling. All internal parts in excellent condition, action works strong. Solid stock in original finish with no cracks or chips just usual usage dings and scratches. Super scarce rifle. Great addition for any advanced collection. Proper bayonet for this rifle available
