Description:
c. 1800 DAWES of LONDON Flintlock OFFICER’S Pistol

Napoleonic Wars Period British Holster Pistol

Here we present an antique William Dawes Flintlock Officer’s Pistol, made circa 1800 in London, England. This pistol is large with a gaping .62 caliber bore in a 10-inch octagonal barrel. It would have been carried on the belt or in a pommel holster. This would have been in use during the Napoleonic Wars.

The lock is marked “DAWES.” The barrel is marked “LONDON”. The left side of the barrel is marked with pre-1813 London proof marks. The “DC-838” marking was a later addition and is a Dublin Constabulary registration number from the 20th Century. It is also equipped with a small front sight blade and a notched rear. The stock is beautifully checkered, the wood to metal fit is very nice, and the metal parts have some modest but finely cut engraving on the barrel tang, trigger guard and finial, and lock. There is a small oval initial placard on the top of the wrist. This pistol was a head above many of the competition in terms of quality. The action is a testament to that, being strong and crisp. Though many of these type pistols were converted to percussion, here is a true survivor in its original flintlock form.

The overall condition is near fine. The iron parts have an even gray patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock shows use and remains smooth, solid, and whole. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is excellent. This is a handsome and finely produced English pistol.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
