Description:
PERCUSSION TARGET PISTOLS- DUELING from estate of C. Harris of Mountain View Mo. A pair of very rare[museum art] circa 1845 percussion Dueling/Target pistols by S.J. Bovy of Belgium in fine to excellent condition, cased with accessories. Each pistol contains the Liege proof marks on the flats. The undersides of the barrels are marked with a "S.J. Bovy" signature. The Bovy family of craftsmen worked in Liege, Belgium ca. 1845. The last sale of record for a set of this style S.J. Bovy pistols was in May 2008 by Christie's for the price of $8,593. The Christie set was not complete. This set is complete- please see photos. If interested, please ask for more photos. The pair measure 15-1/2" overall with nearly 9" medium weight octagon barrels that are approx 44 caliber with micro grooved rifling. The pistols are beautifully stocked in elegant select walnut that show checkering at grip and seashell carving around the forestock. The pair are equipped with set triggers, scroll guards and fixed sights. The barrels show a stripped finish, locks and mounts were case hardened 50-60% original dulling finish remains. The actions are crisp, the bores are very good plus, the case is in very good condition with just some slight fading, normal wear and impressions of pistols in the padded lid. The case retains original mold, powder dipper, combination tool, mallet, oiler, cap box, cleaning and driving rods. Extra nipples, (2) keys and balls are contained in lidded compartment. The exterior of the case is a light colored oak with brass handle and mounts. The exterior of the case is good with normal storage and some cracks in the lid from aging. The craftsmanship of these pistols would be impossible to duplicate for the asking price of these very rare instant heirlooms.
