The 42"" round barrel has an excellent, like new bright smooth bore. It has the correct P over eagle over V with a small 4 following at the breech. The barrel tang is dated 1836. The barrel and bands have an even bright finish with a few storage scratches. The lock is strongly marked with the eagle over U.S. at the center and SPEING over FIELD over 1836 at the tail. The lock shows its original case hardened finish mixed with bright. The cock has most of its case hardened finish. The trigger guard, butt plate, and side plate are bright with minimal staining. The sling swivels and ramrod are present. The stock is excellent with sharp edges, no cracks or chips, two strong cartouches on the left flat, a cartouche at the rear of the trigger guard tang to the rear of the JBR stocker's initials, and light storage wear. The action functions correctly. These Type III Springfield Model 1816 muskets are hard to find in original flint like this one as most were arsenal altered to percussion. You will never need to upgrade this excellent 1836-dated musket. SOLD Antique: Yes |
