Description:
This is a 1918 production Smith & Wesson Military and Police Model revolver in .38 Special with beautiful vintage Mother of Pearl grips. This M&P appears to be a very old re-nickel of what appears to have been a clean gun that maybe just had some superficial finish wear. The nickel plating is mostly bright, clean, and handsome overall, showing only some small handling marks and some small spots of prior rust/finish loss. The original case colors on the trigger and hammer however have faded and are no longer visible, showing various shades of gray now. All of the S&W factory markings are still very crisp and legible on this Smith, including the fine markings on either side of the barrel, the serial number on the cylinder, the assembly number stamped on the crane and opposite the crane on the frame, and the S&W Logo on the left side of the frame. It is because of these clean stampings and lack of visible flaws under the nickel finish that there is some doubt of whether this was an old re-nickel or factory original finish. The bore in this Smith is good to average, showing nice well-defined rifling throughout the barrel but with some very light pitting/frosting in the grooves. The six chambers of the cylinder are in similar condition, showing only the lightest frosting but no major pitting or defects. The custom grips on this Smith really complete the gun. They are beautiful genuine Mother of Pearl and appear to be approximately the same age as the gun. Both grips are perfectly fit to the grip frame and a perfect match to each other in both color and brilliance. When looking at either grip panel you can see lots of color, figure, and depth in them, giving the grip an almost 3-D look to it despite the grip surface being perfectly smooth. Both grips are in excellent condition overall, with only a small little chip out of the inside front corner visible on the right grip. Both grips are free from any cracks or repairs and are tight to the gun with no wiggle. This Military & Police revolver is in good working order, and the action is "in time" whether it is worked in double or single-action. This handsome and classy vintage Military & Police Model would be a great addition to any Smith & Wesson collection and could be enjoyed as both a shooter and a long-term investment.
