Description:
General Specs: Remington, Year 1899, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 15oz, Chokes C/IC, LOP 15 1/8", DAH 2 3/4", DAC 1 11/16"
Serial Number: 114361

Have you seen many high-grade Remington doubles lately? Look the internet over; you will find few indeed.  The Model 1894 was the first top lever, hammerless double Remington with less than 16 years of production, the last made in 1910.  There are plenty of old damascus A Grade 1894's for sale, some even with nitro steel barrels, but highly engraved Remingtons are rarely seen.  This fine DE Grade sn114361, made in 1899 is a special find.  Charles Semmer authored the definitive book on Remington double shotguns, aptly entitled “Remington Double Shotguns”.  In his book you will learn that the A Grade was the entry level gun, and the E Grade was the highest level of catalogued offerings.  He describes the DE as a RARE MODEL, WITH 75-100 KNOWN TO EXIST.  THIS EXACT GUN IS PICTURED IN HIS BOOK ON PAGES 162 AND 163.  Examine the photos of this gun and you will see an exquisite example of American gunmaker’s art.  The engraving was cut by hand by Joseph Loy, one of America’s premier early 20th century engravers, with his distinctive “hidden” signature on both side of the action.  The 30” Legia Damascus barrels (first I have ever observed and gorgeous!) are bold and unique showing all the factory original pattern, the highly figured (both sides) English walnut stock hand-checkered to perfection, the forend having ribbons dividing the 32 LPI panel from the 28 LPI main checkering, the wrist adorned with arrow points and multi-point 28 LPI checkering, and 32 LPI checkered sidepanels.  THIS DE IS FACTORY ORIGINAL IN EVERY WAY, INCLUDING WOOD (finish lightly oiled from pistol grip checkering rearward, but not refinished) AND METAL FINISHES, RETAINING 99% VIVID CASE COLOR WITH ONLY A HINT OF FADING, 99% VIVID DAMASCUS PATTERN, PERFECT SCREWS, ENGRAVING DEMONSTRATING INCREDIBLY DETAILED SCROLL SURROUNDED BY FANCY BORDERS HIGHLIGHTING MAGNIFICENT GAME BIRDS WITH CRISP ANATOMICAL DETAILS.  The engraving is perfectly clear without a hint of wear.  This special-order Remington is mounted with a stock that measures 15 1/8” LOP to the original horn buttplate, with a nice 2 ¾” drop at heel.  TALL GUYS TAKE NOTE!  The mechanics are excellent with strong ejectors, barrels tight on the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun.  The barrels are healthy as the day they left the factory, with mirror shiny bores, a minimum barrel wall thickness of 30 thou anywhere on the barrels.  Weighing 7lbs. 15oz. and balanced ½” ahead of the hinge pin, the gun feels lively in hand and would make for an incredible clays and upland gun, especially behind a good dog.  My title to this ad poses the question; “BEST ON THE PLANET?”.  Many of you reading this ad recognize my experience in the doublegun world, and I find it almost certain that this is indeed the finest example of a Remington DE Grade in existence.  Those who cherish CONDITION GUNS know that the last few percentage points of factory finishes separates the “best from the rest”.  You have to pay a fair price to own the best in existence, but there is only one of them, and it could be yours!  Thank you for looking and don’t miss this rare opportunity to invest in a rare and obscure, highly desirable American treasure.
