Description:
This is a beautiful example of a 1943 production Union Switch & Signal M1911A1, with appropriate proof marks, and the rotated or lazy p proof mark on the slide, which was done due to poor US Ordnance Drawing. US&S guns were known for their high quality. In fact, none of the 55,000 pistols inspected and fired by US&S's in-house Ordnance Department inspector were rejected. All received the "R.C.D." inspector's mark in a circle underneath the slide lock, showing that Lt. Col. Robert C. Downie had inspected and approved them. Union Switch & Signal manufactured a variety of ordnance-related items during both World Wars. In April 1942, the company received a contract for the production of 200,000 Model 1911A1 pistols. Due to a drop in projected requirements, this number was later reduced to 55,000, the last of which were shipped in November 1943. This makes US&S second only to Singer for the smallest production run of M1911A1s during the Second World War. .45 Auto
