Description: This very rare 1948 South African contract Enfield .303 No4 Mk1 Fazakerely manufactured rifle has all matching numbers- the receiver number matches the bolt, magazine, barrel, and stock numbers. The online information regarding the dates, numbers of and serial number ranges for the South African contract rifles is very vague. Even though proofed with South African proofs, the five didget number of this rifle appears to be outside of any contract serial number group for South African contract rifles available on line- an interesting history- possibly personal rather than military purchase. The original wood furniture appears walnut with handling usage. I chose not to sand them down but leave original condition. The upper handguards lighter color suggest they were replaced. It has a Mk 1 micrometer rear sight and brass butt plate. Under the handguard, the barrel shows numbers matching receiver with 95% blueing. The barrel is bright with solid groves. The proofmarks on the rifle are that of South Africa- crossed flags with SA, crossed rifle and arrow and U shape with V inside. The metal condition is excellent- no rust or pits. I could not find any import marks. If interested, I have more photos.
