Description:
This rifle is Finnish Mosin Nagant Infantry Rifle that was modified at the Tikka arsenal from a Russian M91 in 1942. The Finns decided at an early date to use and improve on the Russian designed Mosin-Nagants rather than develop something completely new on their own for their armed forces. They could do this because they had purchased large stocks of Mosin-Nagants from Austria and Germany in the 1920s and then captured a large number from the Russians in the "Winter War of 1939-40." This rifle is a 1942 model, as marked appropriately on the barrel shank. The Finn arsenals used captured Russian receivers but built a completely new rifle on them with a new stock and new barrel designed to improve accuracy and improve the rifle's durability to better suit the rifle to the harsh climate of the far north. It has the original rear sight, but the Finns stamped meters on the right side of the sight and lined out the archaic Russian "arshini" measurements on the left side. See photos. The stock is in good shape with no splits or cracks, just normal handling wear from wartime service with the Finnish army. The barrel and bolt numbers match on this rifle. The magazine floor plate does not match and the buttplate is a Finnish replacement that is not serialized. The bore is very good and is shiny with bright lands and grooves and has a good muzzle. Overall, this is a nice rifle that is a very representative of the Finnish rifle process. It would enhance any Mosin-Nagant or Finnish battle rifle collection. 7.62X54R
