Description:
AN EXCITING OFFERING! REMINGTON No. 1 ROLLING BLOCK HEAVY OCTAGON SPORTING RIFLE (BUFFALO RIFLE) IN .44-77 CALIBER. These big caliber Rolling Block Sporters are very difficult to find and this is one of the nicest condition examples I've seen in a very long time.  The 30" full octagon barrel, with correct Remington crown at the muzzle, measures .985" at the muzzle and is only slightly smaller diameter than the octagon top receiver. Standard barrel length for this model was 26" with an additional charge made by Remington for each additional 2" increment. Importantly, the serial number on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm matches the receiver number. This was a special order rifle as it is fitted with a set trigger as well as a Remington "Rough & Ready" rear sight mounted just ahead of the receiver. This sight has a buckhorn notch plus a ladder for longer rang shooting. The sight is intact, but needs the sliding disc (fortunately, Montana Vintage Arms reproduces this sight complete for $90 and includes three eye discs- I'm sure they could inexpensively supply a replacement disc for this one). The front sight appears to be a Beach folding globe sight that is missing the "folding globe" portion with only the bead sight remaining. By the serial number under the forend is also stamped "S.T." for set trigger and "E.S." for extra sights or special sights. Ahead of the forearm is stamped "44 S" for .44 Sharps or .44-77 caliber. The barrel has the correct E. Remington one line marking and retains nearly all the lightly aged deep blue with only one rub spot on the right octagon flat that is brownish. The receiver still retains some nice light case color- more on the left side with the right side more faded. The patent dates are clear on the side of the receiver and there are no extra holes in the upper tang (these did not come factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight like the Sharps rifles were). Screw heads are excellent and the breech block and hammer show excellent  factory high polish blue. The set trigger needs an adjustment to set when pushed forward, yet works fine as a non-set trigger. The nicely grained stock and forearm show only light handling with very tight wood to metal fit. The bore is bright excellent! The serial number on this rifle is in the 6XXX range which probably puts it in the late 1870s era of production. The overall weight of this rifle is about 11 1/4 lbs which is very heavy for a Rolling Block. These big frontier rifles are rare and those that surface are typically in well used and often abused condition. This is a truly fine example.
