Description:
Another “ESTATE” firearm listing brought to you from Dust 2 Dollars who prides themselves on showing the complete gun in high quality pictures along with a detailed description for your consideration.

We offer you a “SCARCE” and very early James Purdey single barreled 12 bore percussion rifle Manufactured in 1836 for the Revered M. G. Beresford of Ireland.

This rare rifle just celebrated its 185th birthday this month, making this rifle a real survivor of time, history and man. The factory letter states it was built and sold on July 12, 1836 for Revered M .G. Beresford from Kilmore, Cavan county Ireland.  Marcus Beresford was the Archbishop of Armagh Primate of All Ireland. The Anglican Archbishop of Armagh is the ecclesiastical head of the Church of Ireland. So yes, this man was something to himself and others in the early 1800’s. He ordered the gun at the rate of £5, and by exchange of an old double gun as indicated on the factory letter. Which today would be valued at £5,858. So this was a very expensive gun for a very prominent man that was basically at one time the head of the Christian Church of Ireland.
It appears he wanted a very ornate gun as the engraved animal scenes on this early Purdey are very rare to find, and with the fully engraved patch box makes this a very unique rifle. It wears the original length 30” 12 bore barrel that has a very fine bore showing very fine lands and grooves with light pitting. It has wears the original sights as shown. With an express rear sight has one standing and three folding platinum center lined blades marked for 50, 150, 100 and 200. The barrel shows very strong pattern with some dings and marks but no pitting. The top is flat and engraved “J PURDEY. 314-1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON.”. The bottom is stamped with serial number “2585 - London proof – JP – then a Crown “P” proof. The rear of the barrel has a platinum line as shown, with the rear tang being engraved along with a Lynx’s face. The under-rib is fitted with two pipes with the front one mounted with a sling eye. The breech shows the vented platinum “blow-out” vent which was inserted in the breech under the nipple to relieve pressure. The trigger guard, patch box, lock and hammer are all engraved as shown. These multiple games scenes are not often found making this Purdey a very nice find. The stock length of pull is original at 14 ¼” to the set trigger. The lock and safety work as does the adjustable set trigger. The only distraction to the rifle is the stock was broken at one time as shown in the pictures. It is solid with no movement in the repair though.
