Justice & Co, Philadelphia Lock, American Eagle Inlay, & Double Set Triggers, .30 Cal, mfg. circa 1850's. This is a classic Hawken style plains rifle in excellent original condition fitted with highly unusual solid pewter furniture. In all our years of collecting we have never seen another like it. The massive octagon barrel measures 31 1/8" long and 1 1/4" across the flats. It retains it's original dovetailed brass blade front sight and fixed standing buckhorn rear sight. The engraved lock is marked "P. S. J. & Co / WARRANTED" and is the product of Philip Justice from Philadelphia. Overall the metal has a very rich dark plum patina with sharp edges throughout. The stock is beautifully figured and features a checkered wrist with a large engraved pewter American Eagle cheek inlay. The wood remains wonderfully untouched retaining most of it's original varnish with no cracks, chips, or repairs whatsoever. Finely cast pewter buttplate (with original iron tip), toeplate, sideplate, patchbox (with three original balls), cheek inlay, triggerguard, wedge escutcheons, and forend cap all have a natural dull gray patina. Original iron ramrod pipes with iron tipped wood ramrod. The action and double set triggers are crisp and function flawlessly. Perfect original nipple. Fair bore with strong 5-groove rifling front to back and moderate blackpowder frosting. Weight is a hefty 14 lbs 5 oz. This is a very fine and totally unique 100% original plains rifle that will be an instant highlight among any collection.
