Photos do not truly convey the sheer size and quality of this monstrous rifle which weighs a staggering 18 lbs 13 oz. William Robinson and John Krider began manufacturing guns, both as partners and individually, at the same location on Washington St. sometime around 1837. By 1845 their partnership had apparently dissolved and the two men went their separate ways with Krider continuing his practice into the last quarter of the 19th century. While John Krider's name has become synonymous with quality and American craftsmanship Robinson was in fact his equal at the time and today guns bearing his name alone are quite rare. This rifle would have been made for a wealthy ambitious frontiersman solely for the purpose of supplying large quantities of meat to a local hotel, market, or railroad. The tremendous size of the barrel would have assured consistent accuracy as well as reduced recoil for the shooter who may have found himself firing at large game all day long. The Damascus barrel measures just 33 3/4" long yet is over 1 5/8" wide across the breech tapering only slightly by the end of the muzzle. It retains it's original dovetailed iron front sight base with a leaded brass blade added during the period as well as a fully adjustable rear sight and provisions for mounting a lollipop sight atop the tang. The gun is beautifully engraved throughout with clamshell and floral motifs and a running stag on the triggerguard bow. The lock is marked "ROBINSON" with "PHILADa" stamped on top of the breech. The barrel has turned a smooth pleasing dark plum patina with traces of Damascus pattern remaining while the lock and barrel tang show 75% thinned silver finish. The stock is well figured and features a checkered straight grip with a fluted cheekpiece and remains in excellent condition overall. The wood retains most of it's original varnish and aside from the typical 1/2" crack ahead of the lock screw has miraculously survived without any other cracks, chips, or repairs whatsoever. Thick silver plate engraved brass buttplate, toeplate, patchbox, triggerguard, wedge escutcheons, and ramrod entry pipe. Large horn forend cap with iron ramrod pipes and replacement wood ramrod. The action and double set triggers are perfectly crisp and function flawlessly. The hammer screw is likely replaced and subsequently the hammer is quite loose on the tumbler. The nipple is a clean old replacement. Excellent bore showing bright and sharp 7-groove rifling front to back. A very unusual and impressive rifle from a great early American maker.
