Description:
1958 Winchester Model 70 with factory 22” featherweight barrel and folding rear sight in 270win.  Rifle features a sleeved-on Redfield bronze tipped front blade sight, textured ramp and slip-on hood.   Weaver 1" low quick release rings and bases.  Thinned bolt knob featuring 2-panel checkering and modestly checkered bolt release.  Polished bolt runway and feed ramp to factory magazine.  Griffin & Howe hinged floorplate with inside trigger guard release.   Exterior metal surfaces polished then finished with a custom caustic bluing resulting in a beautiful deep rich blue.

Well figured French walnut stock styled in Fisher's original Winchester pattern measures 13 3/8" LOP featuring a swept cheekpiece, shorten and thinned forearm inspired by the traditional trim lines of English rifles, a rarity for it's time.  Borderless wrap around fleur-de-lis checkering, classic ebony tip, finished off with matching Biesen steel buttplate and pistol grip cap.

All of metal & wood work are the product of master metalsmith & stock maker, the late Jerry Fisher.

Sale includes handwritten letters from Jerry Fisher about the rifle and copy of 1994 Gun Digest article.

CONDITION (Based on NRA Gun Condition Standards): Metal is very good and retains essentially all of its bluing with only slight silvering on bolt knob and sharp edges of bottom metal, from normal wear. Stock is in good to very good condition retaining nearly all of its original finish with scattered, minor dings and scratches from hunting use.  Bore is excellent, sharp, bright, and shiny.

Weight: 7lbs 12 oz as seen in photo's

PROVENANCE:  Rifle was originally commissioned by Gun Digest journalist Roderick S. Carmen.  The rifle first went into service Fall of 1962.  Shortly after, the rifle was featured in the 18th Edition of Gun Digest Custom Guns section (1964).  Later that same year was featured again in Outdoor Life’s December 1964 issue by Jack O’Connor’s article entitled “Stocks for hunting Rifles”.  At the same time, Maynard Buehler featured the rifle for its ads picturing of their scope mounts on the rifle.  The rifle was then featured in the 1994 Gun Digest magazine titled A Classic Gets To Africa where Mr. Carmen elaborates on the rifle’s build and history.  Most recently, the rifle appeared in the 20th Edition of the Gun Digest article title “California-style” of custom stocks.
