Description:
Sale Pending. This is a really strong example of an 1873 saddle ring carbine with lots of original finish. This carbine was made is in the 451,000 serial range built in the year 1893.  By nearly all appearances, its a plain ordinary 1873 SRC in 44-40 with a 20" round barrel, full magazine, carbine buttplate w/trapdoor, saddle ring, and ladder rear sight with correct 2 to 9 graduations and marked "1873" at the top.  This is ones to still have the "1873" marked sight as the date was  omitted shortly after the Model 1892 was introduced...sometime in 1893.  Back in its day, these repeaters packed a lot of fire power in a compact size.  They were ideal for use by lawmen, outlaws, Mexican revolutionaries, cowboys but in truth, were used throughout the World and not just in North America.  This one still has quite a bit of original blue remaining on the frame and barrel which is unusual for a carbine as most of these were purchased as utility guns and got used up and thrown away.  Today most of the survivors look as though they were carried on horseback, slid in an out of leather scabbards, and received rough treatment in tough outdoor climates...not to mention how many got their stocks broken from horses rolling over on them...see Bill Goodman's who did an interesting write-up about this phenomenon. Bottom line is that its hard to find a 73 carbine with much condition left....this is exceptionally nice for a carbine.
Overall, its in NRA Antique Fine to Fine Plus condition. The receiver retains 70% thinning  original blue remaining on the left side of the receiver where it was protected by the saddle ring staple which being the high spot, reduced the amount of wear to the original finish.  There is a nice shadow worn through the finish from the saddle ring on the left side....a must have for collectors wanting an honest-worn Winchester 73 or 1892 carbine. Dust Cover still shows 60% speckled original blue.   The right side has good coverage but is more speckled with patina that the left...about 40% original blue that is stronger towards the rear of the frame and around the side plates.  The loading port still shows much of its original fire blue.  Case colors on the hammer have mostly faded out to a mottled silver/yellow tones with patina mixing in with bright colors visible when the hammer is cocked.  Lever has aged to a smooth brown patina that is attractive.  The barrel shows about 70% original age darkened blue that is plumming but still clearly discernable as blue. The magazine tube is more brown with about 30% age darkeneed blue visible in the more protected areas. The wood is just fantastic for a carbine...pletely untouched, never cleaned, great wood to metal fit with the wood still swelling up slightly over the wood just like it did when it left the factory. The bore on this carbine is very good overall with nice lands and grooves and a few minor pits which is typical of the black powder era in the late 19th century.   The action is still quite good and works quite well. If you're tired of looking for a decent, you will not be disappointed with this one.  Antique, No FFL required under Federal Law.  State laws and local laws may vary however.  No sales to NYC, Chicago, or DC.  NJ will require an FFL.  Sorry, no international sales.  45.00 shipping.
