GREAT OFFERING! WOOLY MAMMOTH FOSSILIZED IVORY GRIPS FOR COLT (AND CLONES) 1911 AUTO PISTOLS! The Wooly Mammoth pretty much became extinct about 10,000 years ago at the end of the Pleistocene. A large number of the remains of these animals ended up in the permafrost of Siberia and Alaska. Their bones and tusks have been harvested for many years. the tusks typically take on minerals from the soil in which they were entombed for thousands of years. this gives the ivory a rich and very varied coloration. The ivory from the "bark" or outside of the tusk tends to be darker and heavily pigmented, while the more inner portions can be as light as creamy-white. Mammoth ivory can be separated from now-illegal elephant ivory by the grain structures. Elephant ivory has an even-lined structure while Mammoth has a "cross hatch" grain pattern (easily seen on the cross section cut of the ivory)- this is important when dealing with legalities! This beautiful grip set is probably from the mid-section of a tusk as it has both the rich creamy color of aged ivory mixed with darker brown. With elephant ivory no longer in the market place, Mammoth ivory is at a premium. It is very hard to find now and prices have really escalated. This grip set has been "stabilized" chemically so that it should not easily crack, chip or shrink. I've had a pair of these on a 1911 .45ACP for a number of years and they truly look rich and distinctive!
