The Smith & Wesson Model 61 Pocket Escort .22 Long Rifle sub pistol was market as a self defense pistol. It was introduced in 1970 to fill a void in the market created by the Gun control Act of 1968 banning importation of small pocket pistols. It was only manufactured for 3 years, 1970 to 1973, with a production run of 65,438 pistols. About 10 percent of the total production were finished in nickel. This 61-3 pistol is the third engineering change where the frame was upgraded to forged aluminum from the older cast frame. This nickeled finished Pocket Escort pistol was manufactured 1971/72. .22 Long Rifle
