Description:
A fine original English game register or counter by G. & J. W. Hawksley. Though there has been a proliferation of Indian made reproductions on the market of late, many pedaled as originals, this one is guaranteed to be an original 19th century English register. These registers are highly sought after, very collectible, and hard to come by. They were used by English sportsmen in the latter half of the 19th century to keep track of their take or bag during a shoot. Sportsmen colloquially refer to them as "Norfolk liars." I assumed from this that sportsmen collectively didn't think much of sportsmen from Norfolk. I'm assured, however, by a more knowledgable student of English sporting arms and accessories, that the colloquial name is an homage to the many great game estates around Norfolk where these registers were regularly used. A photograph of the 19th century Hawksley catalog cover and of the catalog page advertising some of the various game registers offered by Hawksley are included in this listing. Here's your chance to own a rare and original 19th century English game register. If you've always wanted one you can stop looking now. It functions perfectly, clicking positively to record each pheasant, partridge, rabbit or hare taken. It is the perfect compliment and finishing touch - the proverbial cherry on top - to an original gun casing. It is always an unexpected but most pleasant surprise to open a gun case and find one of these little gems tucked within one of its compartments.
