Description:
SPRINGFIELD ARMORY, – U.S. Model 1898 Springfield. U.S. Model 1898 - .30/40 KRAG-JORGENSEN with military sling.
Rifle stock Dated 1901, 30" Barrel - .30/40 Krag Caliber, 6 bullet magazine capacity. Springfield Armory Stamped U.S. Model 1898 and stock dated 1901. Gun Receiver Serial Number dates gun produced in Fiscal Year 1899. Bolt action repeater.
The gun is rare All Original used condition. The rifle has Fine Bright Bore, Original Blued (Black) case hardened finish. Straight grain and grip American walnut stock with handguard with a very good wood finish. Receiver is marked “Model 1898” in front of U.S. Springfield Armory and SN on left side. Hand guard is unmarked. Forearm is matching walnut with finger grooves. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel shows an even plumb brown patina overall with some high-point wear and minor rub marks. Barrel band pretty much matches the Barrel in appearance. Rear and front sights are very good. Raised front blade sight. Rear sight is adjustable buckhorn rear with an elevator! Receiver is a dark brown black patina with remnants of black oil quenched case hardening. Loading door shows traces of blue blending to a gray brown patina. Extractor is a plumb brown patina with slight traces of fire-blue. Bolt handle is a plumb brown patina with traces of case color in protected areas. Stock is very good with minimal dents and bruises and sharp markings. Hand guard is very good with a few minor dents. The gun has a trapdoor steel butt plate. It is missing many of the normal handling marks one would expect to see in a military rifle of this age. This is an impressive gun. Everything is in overall very good condition. This gun doesn’t appear to have seen much action. For the age of this rifle is it looks great!  Certainly, it was serviced and cared for by a good soldier and subsequent owners. This is a very nice survivor rifle in very nice overall condition. Great condition for an inexpensive collector and/or a shooter!
It is important to please note that no part of this posting is intentionally misrepresented. All information is as accurately described as possible. I strive for a happy well informed buyer!
The gun was "The Spanish-American War Rifle”. Vintage military rifle as used at San Juan Hill, Cuba – with Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders. The Spanish–American War was an armed conflict between Spain and the United States in 1898. Hostilities began in the aftermath of the internal explosion of USS Maine at Havana Harbor in Cuba. Gun was issued in both rifle and carbine configurations, the 1898 Krag-Jorgensen design filled the gap between the Trapdoor Springfield and M1903 in US military service, seeing service during the Spanish-American War in both Cuba and the Philippines. This was the first U.S. smokeless service rifle until replaced by the 1903 Springfield. Rifle has a unique bolt action mechanism. The magazine can be opened to accept cartridges, and when closed, will feed the rounds up into the action. This allows for fast and easy loading, which was an appreciated feature at the time. Gun stock has sharp inspector cartouche “JSA” over “1901” in rectangle on left side above trigger and Circle-P armory proof stamp behind trigger guard with “A.L.” stamped in front of it.
Serial Number 175252, MFG: Fiscal Year 1899 (per gun’s SN# marking). It is Mechanically Excellent in Firing Condition. I have personally shot the gun 12 times with a 7 inch group at 100 yards. (And I am just an OK marksman!) The gun is an excellent example of Springfield Armory production quality. The action is very smooth, the trigger has a crisp release, safety is functional and magazine spring is strong. This model was used for many years as a military match competition rifle based on its legendary accuracy. It was also popular post military surplus for big game hunting.
DISCLAIMER: While this rifle is mechanically sound and 100% intact. It is only being offered as an antique collector’s item. The seller does not accept responsibility as to the shooting safety or reliability. And it should not be fired without a careful inspection and confirmed safe to fire, by a very qualified gunsmith or gun owner. And only then, with approved / certified ammunition for this specific model.
