Following the Civil war thousands of Civil War muskets and parts were available to private companies who built rifles and Fowler's for civilians to use for hunting. This one was built with a 1863 Shubarth civil war contract lock and barrel and is much better quality than those built by companies such as Bannerman. The full length smooth bore barrel has a front bead site and is approximately 62 caliber. The Lock is marked 1863 CD Sbubarth Providence and works fine in excellent condition. The but plate, trigger gaurd and nose cap are brass. The dark walnut half stock is very good with nice color and a few dents. A overal very nice antique smooth bore musket.
