This 1850-dated Robbins & Lawrence Model 1841 Mississippi rifle was altered during the Civil War for a socket bayonet. This unusual alteration consists of turning the first 3"" of the barrel down (which, on this example, is about .020"" oversize) to accept a Model 1855 socket bayonet. The original brass front sight was replaced with a Model 1855 rifle musket sight, placed 1.25"" from the muzzle. With the exception of the slightly oversize barrel diameter, these dimensions match those discussed in section 201.8 of George D. Moller's classic ""American Military Shoulder Arms, Vol. III"". The 33"" round 54 caliber barrel has a very good bore that is excellent toward the breech but has light storage pitting toward the muzzle. It has a smooth brown patina with light pitting in the bolster area. It is marked at the breech US over LBC over P and the breech tang is dated 1850. The lock is marked in the center in four horizontal lines ROBBINS & LAWRENCE US and WINDSOR VT over 1850 at the tail. The brass bands, trigger guard, side plate, patchbox, and buttplate have an even aged patina. The spare cone is in the patchbox. The swivels and a ramrod for mine bullets are present. The stock is good with issue dents and dings and wear, a little wood loss along the ramrod channel and sides of the barrel, and two visible cartouches on the left flat. The action functions correctly. This interesting socket bayonet altered rifle comes with a correctly fitted bayonet. This one is for the Mississippi rifle collector who has every variation...but this one.
