Only 770 54 caliber, percussion, breech loading, single shot Merrill rifles were bought by the Union during the Civil War. They are among the more rare and sought after percussion Civil War percussion breech-loading rifles. They were manufactured by H. Merrill, Baltimore, MD.  As are the majority, this rifle is a first type. The breech lever is unlatched by pulling back the front tabs. It is then lifted up and pulled back to expose the chamber so the paper cartridge can be loaded. The round 33"" barrel on this rifle has an excellent bore with bright, strong rifling. It has approx. 90% of its original blue finish. The lock plate is marked forward of the hammer J.H. MERRILL BALTO. over PAT. JULY 1858 over APL. 9 MAY 21-28-61 with the serial number, 9628, at the tail. The lock has most of its case hardened finish. The action has stong case colors in the protected areas and visible colors on the top. The brass bands, nose cap, trigger guard, patch box, side plate, and butt plate have a bright aged patina. The swivels and ramrod are present. The stock is fine with no cracks or chips, light to moderate issue wear including scattered dents, sharp edges, and a strong rarely seen cartouche on the left flat. The action functions correctly. The 21st Indiana regiment was almost entirely armed with the Merrill rifle. This excellent and scarce first type Merrill rifle is a must to complete your Civil War collection. This is the best example we have seen.
