Description:
This set contains an example of Colt’s First Model, Second Model and Third Model Derringers, presented in a handsom display case. This was Colts first offering designed for metallic cartridges, intended for personal defense. They are all chambered in the then popular .41 rimfire cartridge.
This First Model, SN 4605, (Mfg’d. c.1884) .41 Cal. with a 2 ½” barrel. The barrel top is marked “COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG Co / HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.  No. 1”. Colts First Model was made from 1870-1890 and Approx. 6500 were made.
This pistol, SN: 4605 was made c.1884.  This pistol design originated with National Arms Co. who made about 30,000 between 1864 and 1870 when Colt purchased the company.
This pistol remains in excellent factory original, fully functional condition, having a blued barrel and a nickel plated matching numbered steel frame. The bore is Exc. with some slight corrosion near the chamber area.

The Second Model, SN 9252, (Mfg’d. c.1890) .41 Cal. with a 2 ½” barrel. The barrel top is marked “COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG Co / HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.   No. 2”. Colts Second Model was made from 1870-1890 and Approx. 9000 were made. The Second Models were numbered from 1 -9000, this is number 9252 and representants one of the last produced in 1890.
After buying National Arms in 1870 Colt evolved the design into the Second Model by adding the wood grips which simplified the manufacturing process.
This pistol remains in factory original excellent condition with a nickel-plated barrel and frame. There is some minor flaking of the frame on the left side. The serial numbers match on the barrel, frame, and walnut grips. The bore is very good with some slight corrosion near the chamber area. The action is fully functional.

The Third Model, SN 10163, (Mfg’d. c.1883) .41 Cal. with a 2 ½” barrel. This is also known as the Thuer model, after the designer Alexander Thuer. The barrel top is marked “COLT”.  Production ran from 1875 - 1912 with Approx. 45,000 of this Third model made.
This pistol is period engraved and nickel plated, it is now mounted with beautiful Ivory grips. The original numbered walnut grips, matching to the frame and barrel are included. There is some modest wear on the left side of the frame where it rubbed on the river boat gamblers vest pocket. The bore is dark with modest pitting in spots. The action is fully functional.

This set is presented in a nice Glass top Cherry locking case with a pocket for 18 .41 Cal display rounds.   A novel addition to enhance the set is an 1875 dated Indian Head penny, 1870 dated Silver Eagle half dollar, and 1875 dated Silver Eagle half dollar.
These Colt Derringer Pistols are each in excellent condition and collectively make a beautiful display set. They represent a milestone in the development of Colt firearms, their first cartridge pistols. A great addition for a Colt collection, or just a handsome display item for your office or gun room.
