These guns were the last of the military Papa Nambus, made between 1923-28, a cooperative venture between the Tokyo Arsenal who supplied the frames and Tokyo Gas and Electric (TGE) who completed the pistols. According to Derby and Brown, they are found in the serial number 8,075-8,549 range (only 475 made), all with a one-piece frame with milled side panels. As per all pistols in this contract, this gun has a 5” barrel with a drift adjustable front sight and tangent rear sight graded 1-5. Top of chamber TGE “Tokyo Gas and Electric”. Left side of barrel extension with two Kanji. Right side of barrel extension marked with the symbol of the Tokyo Arsenal, followed by three Kanji surmounting the full serial number. Partial disassembly shows the serial number repeated on the cocking knob, firing pin, knurled retainer and each of the grips. Primary magazine is #2252; spare mag is #1875. Major components rust blued. Strawed extractor, firing pin retainer, trigger, and magazine release button. Complete with original Papa holster and strap. The name “Chuck Rooney” is on the outer lid and ammo pouch flap, along with other markings. A GI number, “US Army” and “158th xxxx” are on the belt loop. No cleaning rod. Synopsis: TGE, Papa Nambu, Holstered, 8436, 8mm. Condition: VG+ original finish with usual holster wear on leading edges and dulling of the straps as carefully photographed. Old congealed grease around extractor and exposed bolt. Comparable condition strawed parts with no suggestion of touch up. Bright bore with very light oxidative etching. Perfect manual mechanics. Primary magazine is G-VG, spare magazine with considerable corrosion. VG holster with supple leather. A small section of the lid hinge has been restitched. Strap in comparable condition with an old stitched repair. A an extremely nice and super late Papa Nambu, in the very scarce 8000 serial range, whose GI bring back history as marked on the holster deserves further research.
