Description:
SELDOM SEEN, SAVAGE MODEL 1905 SINGLE SHOT .22 SHORT, LONG AND LONG RIFLE "TARGET RIFLE" WITH SWISS BUTT PLATE AND SPECIAL SIGHTS. Of all the single shot "Boy's Rifles" this Savage Model 1905 has to be one of the most attractive and appealing. There is some good info on these in the book American Boys' Rifles 1890-1945 by Jim Perkins (Copyright 1976 and I assume out of print now). Savage made this rifle for older boys and adults. It is built a little larger overall than most purely "boy's rifles" and has a heavier than usual 22" barrel that is fitted with a Savage marked and 1905 patented rear sight that is wheel-adjustable for elevation and windage. Further, and this isn't seen on any other rifle of this type I've ever encountered, the trigger is adjustable! According to the illustrated advertisement Savage put out on this one, "More important, however, is the adjustable screw which regulates the pull. No matter what your idea of the trigger pull may be, it may be obtained with this new Savage device. The adjusting screw is located on the under side of the trigger, see illustration, and may be instantly reached by simply taking off the stock." The stock is easily removed by turning the one knurled screw under the forearm- which I did and the adjustment screw is intact! These scarce rifles were made from 1905-1924, which seems like a fairly long production time, however, the numbers made must have been very small as these interesting rifles never seem to come up for sale or show up at gun shows. This example is a particularly fine one as the wood is excellent without any chips or cracks (very unusual for a Boy's Rifle) and it retains most of the blue that is aged and mixing plum. The walnut stock has some small areas of fancy grain- many of these little single shots by various makers were made using gum-wood or a less expensive wood than walnut. The Swiss butt plate even retains quite a bit of light case color! Original sights, tight action and the bore is a little dark with good rifling and only a few small areas of roughness- much better than one would expect. Any kid showing up for a squirrel hunt with one of these rifles a hundred ten years ago would surely be the envy of every other boy (or girl)!  If I were about twelve years old in 1910, I think this is the rifle I'd want!
