Description:
Serial #3733, .450 CF, 6" octagon barrel with a fine, bright bore that has traces of mild freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome revolver that has all-matching numbers, and retains 60-70% of the original bright blue finish with the balance worn to a mellow plum-brown patina. The ejector rod housing, hammer, trigger, and ejector rod have a dull gray-brown patina with scattered spots of dark freckling. The frame has the usual Tranter "football" marking on the right side (double-struck), and a crossed out unit stamp behind the loading gate: "CMR / 123" (Cape Mounted Rifles). A further property stamp is present on the underside of the barrel: "(Crown) / 3", which is described in "Adams’ Revolvers" by Chamberlain and Taylerson; (1976) as being associated with the Basutholand (later: Lesotho) Mounted Police. The checkered walnut grip has a few scattered small handling marks and blemishes, but is otherwise in fine shape. The action lock-up is still tight, and the mechanism functions flawlessly. This is a splendid, African-used Tranter, and would make a fantastic addition to any collection of rare British military handguns. Antique
