Description:
General Specs: Sharps, Year 1877, .45-110, 12lb 6oz, LOP 14"
Serial Number: 160788

We are proud to offer a truly historical and iconic firearm, "Old Reliable", Sharps Model 1874, with 30" octagon barrel. Famous in its heyday and represented in a myriad of modern formats such as film, television and novels, the Sharps rifles are large-bore, single-shot, falling-block, and breech-loading. Designed by Christian Sharps in 1848, and in production until 1881, the Model 1874 earned an enviable reputation for their long-range accuracy.

Besides coming in many calibers, the Old Reliable had a barrel that could be ordered in any length or weight, round or octagon shape, or half-round/half-octagon. Our rifle has a full octagon medium weight barrel with prominent rifling from breech to muzzle and moderate pitting throughout. It is factory chambered in the desirable .45 x 2 7/8" caliber (.45-110) and the optional double-set triggers at 2lb or 2oz on the set.  The type of sights varied with each owner customizing their weapon.  This rifle sports a Sharps Vernier long range peep sight in addition to its barrel mounted factory original ladder sight. The top barrel flat is marked "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN" and "Old Reliable" within a rectangle with cut corners establishing its classic heritage and last but not least is its caliber- cal.45 abutting the action! This historical piece wears its age well, showing very light wear marks for a gun aged as this with an overall pleasing patina to the metal and wood. The action is tight and fully functional, ready to do its job at the range or in the field.  The wood is sound, with no major breaks or repairs, just a few splinters of wood missing on the left and right side of the forend wood.  Other than a few dings expected of a rifle that earned its keep, this gun has not seen abuse and has been cared for throughout its existence - the pictures tell its story in all its glory.  THERE ARE FACTORY RECORDS DOCUMENTING THIS SHARPS RIFLE AND WE WILL INCLUDE THE OFFICIAL LETTER WITH THE SALE.  The gentleman with the records is presently on vacation and will provide the letter upon his return later in August.  He provided information contained herein prior to his departure.

Sharps arms are associated with several major historical events which shaped American destiny in the 19th century. It is well documented that heavy barreled rifles such as these were commonly used for buffalo hunting in the last decades of the 19th century, and in the hands of trained shooters, they were deadly efficient. Today there are reproductions available, but none will deliver the truly historical feel of an original Sharps rifle. The sense of history and adventure embodied in this gun cannot be copied; it really is a singular piece of American design and manufacturing expertise that has worked its way through a century and more reflecting the great American experiment from the birthday of this rifle in 1877 Bridgeport, Connecticut on December 8th, a Saturday, to today where this unique gun can be added to your collection to continue its match through time.
Enjoy.
