Description:
A very interesting, unusual New England made underhammer rifle with about .32/34 cal.,and a 23” octagon barrel turned for starter (none present) with an oxidized bore. The barrel is an overall soft oxidized brown patina showing some pewter undertones, scattered pitting and vise marks on the left and right flats. Its underside is marked “CSS” along with the numeral “3” and what is likely “1 1/2” (perhaps an early rifle from CS Shattuck?). The iron triggerguard is primarily an oxidized brown patina with some remnants of nickel plate, the butt and toeplates are similar. The American black walnut stock rates very good with much original varnish, handling marks, wear on the sharp edges and a simple pendulum-style patchbox. There are the remnants of a front sight, now lowered, and the long tang rear aperture sight is present. The lock is functional and a later antique ramrod is present.When buying a gun always have it examined by a competent gunsmith before shooting.
