Description:
1844 Antique ROBERT JOHNSON US Model 1836 .54 Caliber FLINTLOCK Cavalry Pistol

STANDARD ISSUE of the MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR!

Here we present an antique Robert Johnson Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol dated and made in 1844 in Middletown, Connecticut. This .54 caliber, smoothbore, flintlock pistol is one of approximately 18,000 Model 1836 pistols manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. The Model 1836 was widely considered to be the best designed and manufactured flintlock pistol. The pistol has an 8-1/2 inch round barrel with a brass front sight blade, swivel ramrod with button head and iron mountings.

The barrel, ramrod, butt cap, barrel band and trigger guard are of a “bright” finish. The lock plate, hammer, and tang were once casehardened. The lock is marked “US / JOHNSON / MIDDN.CONN. / 1844” below the brass pan. Inspection and proof marks “JH /P” are visible atop the barrel. The left stock flat is marked with two oval cartouches, one with “JH” for ordnance inspector Joseph Hannis, and the other “WAT” for ordnance inspector Captain William Anderson Thornton. The Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol was the standard issue handgun of the Mexican War.

The overall condition is very good. The action is strong and tight. The bore is semi-bright, darkening towards the muzzle, and remains in good shape! The stock is solid all around! Nice cartouches. A large and robust cavalry pistol!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .54 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
