What is a mystery about this rifle is that it has an old and worn in number stamped in the right side of the butt stock. The numbers are about 1/4" high and were struck with professional-type stamps in a row for 3 1/2" or so. The number is "10 13311125" (with a space after the first "10"). I've seen stampings like this on some military guns, prison guard guns, law enforcement guns and railroad/express agency guns. This is a very late 1876. By the time this rifle was made, the Model 1886 had pretty well made the 1876 obsolete. According to the Winchester Handbook by George Madis, very few of this rifle were made after 1888 and in 1892 only 21 were made! The Winchester letter is typical and only verifies the caliber, barrel, trigger etc. and shipping date of October 1892. I'm sure there is some interesting history in this one. The barrel retains fine even blue that shows only slight age. The magazine tube is similar with a little thinning/mixing brown mainly on the bottom. The receiver is an even thinning blue mixing some brown with nice blue on the dust cover, protected areas and loading gate. It has the original and desirable sporting ladder sight with slide intact that is dated 1876. The front sight is the normal factory small Winchester blade. The brass lifter is marked 45-60 and has not been cleaned or polished. The action is fine and tight with only the half-cock on the hammer weak. The bore is a little dark with fine consistent rifling all the way through with only some fairly minor scattered roughness. This is a really attractive 1876 octagon rifle in a desirable caliber with quite a bit of 129 year old original blue!
