Description:
Here is a handsome Army & Navy boxlock ejector in fine condition.  It was the gun (presumably one of many, but who knows?) of Major General Sir Allan Adair (1897-1988), a highly decorated senior officer of the British Army who served in both world wars.  In WWI he was company commander of the Grenadier Guards, and, in WWII, he was General Officer Commanding of the Guards Armoured Division.  His memoirs are fascinating reading, though, to my disappointment, he doesn't mention strolling across the moors with a double gun.
In any case, this is a wonderful and lively boxlock, well taken care of in its life.  The barrels are 28" with 2 1/2" chambers and excellent bores, choked .005/.034 (approximately skeet/improved modified.)  The rib is engraved: ARMY & NAVY. C.S. LTD.  The receiver features simple border and scroll engraving.  There are traces of case colors still present.  The fore-end has an Anson push-rod release.  The attractive, vertically striped stock has flat top checkering, and measures 1 ½" x 2 3/8" x 15 1/8" with neutral cast.  The weight is 6 lbs 8 oz.  The gun comes in a simple "violin" case.

When Adair was awarded his first Military Cross (in 1918) the inscription read:
For conspicuous gallantry and resource while in command of the support company. Owing to thick fog the leading company lost direction and failed to turn up. He led his company correctly into position and then made several personal reconnaissances under heavy machine-gun and rifle fire, and cleared up the situation. He captured the objectives without the assistance of tanks or artillery, and broke up a hostile counter-attack the following morning.

In any case, this is a classy gun from an interesting gentleman.
