Here we present an antique Joseph Tonks Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the 1850 to 1860s in Boston, Massachusetts. Joseph Tonks began his gunmaking business in 1854 on Union Street in downtown Boston and expanded to other locations prior to leaving his firm to his younger brother Alfred in 1880. After Tonks left in 1880, he moved to Malden, Massachusetts and began working with Andrew Whitmore and the Whitmore Gun Company, who held patents on the early Remington hammer shotguns and later worked on the Colt hammerless shotgun. This one is a relatively short, handy rifle that is very nicely equipped. The barrel is part octagonal, part round with a barrel mounted open rear sight and a tang mounted flip up peep sight. This rifle features German style engraving on German silver hardware. The patch box is small and round with a stag engraved in the center. Even the shape of the castings is very attractive. On the left side of the stock is an inlay with a compass embedded in the center. The overall condition is good+. Strong action. Nice bore with strong rifling. The stock has some damage to the forestock while the butt stock is solid. Engravings are fine. A very handsome rifle from mid-19th Century Boston! Own the original!
