Description:
Here we have a Winchester Model 1873 rifle in the desirable 44 WCF caliber (44-40) and in the desirable configuration of full 24" octagon barrel, full magazine, crescent butt with trap door butt plate, blued and case hardened finish, plain walnut stocks, plain trigger, standard open sights, all confirmed by a Cody Museum email sheet confirming the configuration and showing serial number 317826 applied on November 8, 1889; received in warehouse on December 6, 1889 and shipped on January 13, 1890 to order number 8147. Cody sheet will be supplied to the buyer. This is fresh-to-the-market out of a local collection!

CONDITION: Receiver/upper and lower tangs show 70% bright original blue with a small area of cleaning on the left side plate. The blue really pops in the bright sunlight but was hard to capture in the pictures, and this rifle will definitely look better in hand than the pics show. Barrel has toned to a 20% plum patina with some bright blue in the protected areas around the sights and the lower flats near the mag tube. Mag tube is about 35% blue mixed with patina. Bore is an 8 of 10 with nice rifling and just minor scattered oxidation spots. Stocks are excellent with no splits or cracks, no extra holes, never sanded or refinished, still tight and proud, just minor handling marks and a small loss of the original varnish at the left wrist due to dripping of some bore cleaning solution. Trap door and cartridge lifter are a mellow, uncleaned mustard color. Loading gate retains 50% bright fire blue. Hammer and lever retain traces of the original case hardening. Action is smooth and tight with a properly working half cock safety. Mag tube is tight with no play. Lever does not droop and there is no play in the dust cover. Grades Very Good Plus and is a desirable combination of features and condition.
