SALE PENDING....U.S. Model 1842 Percussion Musket by Springfield Armory...Civil War....LAYAWAY?....... .69 cal., 41” barrel with an oxidized bore. The metal surfaces have aged to a lightly-oxidized blend of gray and brown patina with some light pitting around the bolster and some active light oxidation on the flash shield and the brass front sight blade has been regulated and is toning to a mustard patina. Though softened, the breech tang date of 1852 is legible and matches that of the lockplate with all markings correct and otherwise crisp and there is a “41 *” on the tang of the buttplate. The American black walnut stock rates good to perhaps very good as cleaned with an added finish leaving the metal proud, a 4 1/2” light crack in the "underside" of the forend coming from the ramrod channel, a couple repaired lengthy thin cracks along the right wood line, a chip ahead of the lockplate, and a couple streaks of contaminant staining on the left side of the buttstock. The rear edge of the lower barrel band has been modified into a V-notch sight, the cleanout screw and nipple are later replacements, a correct trumpet-head ramrod is included and the action is strong and crisp.
