CF cal., 22'' round barrel, pinned block-blade front and long range sliding-leaf rear (marked ''C'' for Carbine) sights, marked ''V/P/(eagle head)/P'' at breech; ''low-arch'' trapdoor breechblock is marked ''US/Model/1884'' at hinge; flat lockplate has ''(spread-wing eagle)'' and ''U.S./Springfield'' under latch; steel fittings include sling ring and bar attached to left side opposite lock, two-piece trigger guard, curved buttplate having sliding door opening to trap in butt marked ''US'' at top screw, 1 spring-retained barrel band with sling swivel; oil-stained long-comb walnut halfstock. Mfg'd ca. 1877-78. Condition is very good retaining a smooth blue-brown patina overall, the trigger guard being a brownish color. Stock is sound and smooth likely having been sanded and with a left-side hole where band spring enters, no left-wrist inspector's cartouche, and a pleasing reddish oil-stained finish. Sharp edges and markings, strong and smooth action, bore shines with light frosting toward muzzle and good rifling.
