Description:
This is a very nice all-original 1885-production German Military Model 1883 Reichsrevolver made by the Franz von Dryse firm with WW1 unit markings on it for the Field Artillery Regiment 43, 4th Battery, Waffe # (Weapon) 119.  This revolver is 100% original and all-matching but is missing the loading gate.  The single-action Model 1883 Reichsrevolver was chambered in the 11mm German Service cartridge and was based off of the Model 1879 Reichsrevolver with a shorter 4.6" inch barrel.  The Model 1883 featured a "military" blue finish on the frame, cylinder, and barrel, a strawed yellow finish on the hammer, trigger, assorted screws, and safety, a 6-shot fluted cylinder, a right-side mounted loading gate, fixed iron sights, a left-side mounted safety lever, a quick-release cylinder pin, smooth European Walnut grips, and a lanyard loop on the butt.  The Model 1883 was built by 7 different firms during the production run and was officially in the German Military's service from 1883 until 1908, where it proved to be a robust, reliable, and reasonably accurate sidearm.  With the outbreak of World War 1 the Model 1883 Reichsrevolver was put back into service and used extensively, particularly by the German Landwehr and artillery, supply, munitions, depot, and communications troops.  This particular example is a Dryse-made gun in very good overall condition with perfect mechanics.  The factory blue finish is still very attractive and fully-intact, showing only minor handling marks and some speckles of prior surface rust long removed.  All of the factory markings are crisp and clear, and all of the numbered parts (almost everything is numbered including the screws!) are matching.  The bore in this Reichsrevolver is excellent, free from any pitting, bulges, or visible damage of any kind, showing strong and sharp rifling throughout the barrel.  The 6 chambers of the cylinder are also in great shape and very clean.  The factory straw finish (yellow) has faded on all of the small parts, with only traces of the original straw finish showing in the most protected areas with the balance showing a silver-gray.  The original grips on this Model 1883 are in excellent condition, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  Both grip panels show only minor handling marks and fit the gun perfectly tight with no wiggle.  The rear grip strap is marked with two unit markings, one of which is X'ed out.  The more current WW1 unit marking is stamped "43.A.4.119", which as mentioned before stands nfor Field Artillery Regiment 43, 4th Battery, Waffe # (Weapon) 119.  This Regiment was stationed in Wesel at the river Rein and served the entirity of World War 1.  There is no doubt that this Reichsrevolver saw combat!  The action on this revolver is smooth and precise, and it is in perfect time no matter how fast or slow it is worked.  All of the controls are in perfect working order (except for the missing loading gate) and we have no doubt that it would still fire reliably and accurately with the proper ammo.  If you have been looking for a very handsome all-original Reichsrevolver this Franz von Dryse example would be a superb choice.  As an antique, this revolver can be shipped directly to your home with no FFL needed.
