Description:
J. Purdey & Sons Best SLE - 28ga - Small Frame - 27” - ca. 1972 - Rich Case Colors - VC Leather Maker’s Case & Dust Cover (accessories) - of the late Meredith J. Long Collection - 3" Chamber - Chokes RT: 1/4 LT: 3/4 - 14 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 1 5/8 - 1/4" cast off - 5.3 lbs - SN: 27780 - a fine shotgun with a special lineage - spectacular field gun - some evidence of field use over its 48 years of existence - I am sure that there were some special people along side with Mr. Long on most of his hunts - he was indeed, a star maker in the Houston Art World, and beyond. The case color richness on this gun is much better in person than in the photos - rich and deep. As per the Purdey records and further research, this gun was built for Billy Hodge - I have attached some notes for historical purposes below.

Note:  "Billy was born June 21, 1930 in Valiant, Oklahoma. He graduated from Dallas Woodrow Wilson high school in 1948. He was one of the top amateur Featherweight boxers in Dallas before turning professional in 1949. He proudly served in the United States Air Force and was on the USAF boxing team, then turned professional following discharge and was a ranked Featherweight before retiring in 1955. He assisted his father in building Buckhorn Trading Post and then formed Buckhorn Quality Firearms, one of the finest high quality firearms businesses in the world, serving distinguished customers globally, and on a first name basis with the presidents and managing directors of the most prestigious shotgun makers including Purdey's, Holland and Holland, Westley Richards, Perazzi and Fabbri before retiring in 1995. He was very visible as a major patron to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Camp John Marc Trusts, a Charter Member of Dallas Safari Club, Safari Club International, Game Coin International and the Texas Ranger Museum as well as many conservation causes and law enforcement charities. Billy and Jackie Hodge travelled to Europe, Mexico, Central and South America to hunt together with close friends as well as shooting together in competition. He was a man of impeccable character and generosity with a sly and enduring sense of humor. His word was his bond..."

**Excerpt:
Known for his eponymous art gallery, Meredith Long & Company, which was founded in 1957 and was the longest-running gallery in Houston before it recently closed, Mr. Long was a champion and scholar of nineteenth and early-twentieth-century American Art. In addition to bringing significant exhibitions of works to his gallery by artists like John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt and Frederic Edwin Church, Mr. Long also dealt in contemporary art, particularly championing second generation Abstract Expressionists. While largely national in scope, his program included local talent, with many well-known Texas artists passing through his gallery over its long history: Dorothy Hood, Luis Jiménez, Gael Stack, John Alexander, and Richard Stout, among others.

  • I sincerely hope you enjoy the offerings on this page and dealing with me - I will do my best to ensure this when humanly possible.
  • Quillen-Worfe is a screen name – a compilation of the two most important names - derived from my ancestors – it’s a twisted old family tree.
  • This is not a business - it’s a preferred pastime and passion.
  • God, Family, Shotguns, Dogs, Friends, the USA (possibly in that order) are what I love.
  • You’re encouraged to make reasonable offers on my listings – I will do all that I can to help you acquire your gun of interest.
  • Many of the offerings on this page belong me personally – some are consigned and a few belong to friends and high end dealers that I assist to market their guns online.
  • Guns listed on this page are located at my FFL’s office for your convenience.
  • If you’re a local buyer and the gun you buy belongs to a dealer, there will be tax due if you live the the state of Texas. No exceptions.
  • Call if you want to talk about the gun - most times I answer the phone on weekends and late evenings (not after 9PM CST).
  • I DO NOT make trades with unreasonable people – with that said, if you understand that making a trade must be done with the mindset that you’re going to have to be extremely realistic about the value of your guns - then I’m very open to that discussion.  Otherwise, I stay away from trades entirely.
  • Lay-A-Way is available on some guns, please inquire about my terms if you have a need – glad to do it when I can.  Typically 33% down, 33% in 30 days and then 33% plus shipping on the following 30 days.
