Commercial Conversion Single Shot Hunting Rifle
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle Converted to a Large Game Hunting Rifle. This rifle began life at Springfield Armory as an infantry rifle. At some point long ago, this piece received a new, heavy-duty barrel and some recontouring of the stock. The rear sight is a Lawrence patent such as those found on the Sharps. Most of the fore stock was trimmed to eliminate excess weight and to accommodate the heavy octagonal barrel. The fore end and the wrist were hand-checkered, though it has been worn smooth with use. This would have been a good rifle for the buffalo trade or for anyone likely to run into large and dangerous game animals such as bear, moose, elk, and the like.
The overall condition is very good. Strong action. Bright bore. Solid stock. “1873” dated lock and trapdoor. “US” stamped butt plate tang and lock. A really neat piece of Wild West hardware!
