FINE CONDITION SPECIAL ORDER 28" EXTRA LONG OCTAGON BARREL 1873 .38-40 CALIBER RIFLE WITH SET TRIGGER, #512XXX, MADE 1897. According to the Winchester Handbook by George Madis, only 1201 1873s were made with longer than the standard 24" length and set triggers are a rare additional feature. This 1873 has a particularly nice appearance as it retains most of the original blue on the receiver that has evenly aged somewhat and lightly mixed with plum- but not gray or brown. The barrel also retains fine aged blue. The mag tube is an uncleaned plum/brown. It is fitted with a buckhorn rear sight paired with a low Rocky Mountain blade front sight in the original base. Bore is only a little dark with fine rifling all the way through and any scattered roughness is very surface and will probably clean out. Stock and forearm are excellent with tight wood to metal fit and only the lightest of surface handling marks. Mellow brass lifter and the special order set trigger retains the adjustment screw and sets properly. This is a really fine and unusual special order 124 year old Winchester.
