Description:
J. STEVENS ARMS COMPANY Model 235 DOUBLE BARREL 12 Gauge HAMMER Shotgun C&R

MASSACHUSETTS Made Roaring Twenties Era Shotgun

Here we present a C&R J. Stevens Arms Company Model 235 Double Barrel Side by Side 12 Gauge Hammer Shotgun, made circa the 1920s in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. The Model 235 first showed up in the Stevens catalog in 1909 and was manufactured until 1931 with a total production of approximately 62,000. Stevens stopped producing this model in 1916 and resumed production in 1920.

Between the years of 1909 and 1915, the shotguns would have been roll stamped J. Stevens Arms & Tool. After 1915, J. Stevens A&T changed over to J. Stevens Arms Co. and would have been roll stamped accordingly between the years of 1915 and 1931. Some records indicate that production continued through 1932, however the 1932 Stevens catalog had no Model 235 in it. Some dealers continued to sell existing stock beyond the 1931 date, leading people to believe it was still being made.

The Model 235 is a “box lock” design and was available in a variety of barrel lengths and came in either 12 or 16 gauge. Early models featured English Walnut as their standard stock, while the later models were fitted with the cheaper American Walnut. All 235s has case color hardened receivers and hammers, as bluing was never used on these components during production.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape. Solid stock with worn checkering. Original blue along the barrel rib! Visible markings are shape. Here is an interesting shotgun from J. Stevens that would have gotten the job done.
