Here we present an antique Frank Wesson Model 1870 Medium Frame Pocket Rifle made circa 1870-93 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Frank Wesson was the younger brother of Daniel B. Wesson, of Smith & Wesson fame, as well as Edwin Wesson, who was also a highly-esteemed gunsmith in the mid-to-late-1800s. The fame of his family’s name was not lost on Frank as he was, in fact, a prolific firearms designer and maker in his own right.
Part of the 'Pocket Rifle' series of long barreled single shot stocked pistols, also known as the "Sportsman's Jewel". It was equipped with a globe front and aperture rear sights. The barrel turns on an axis to the right for loading and has a sliding manual extractor. The grips are smooth walnut. There were approximately 5,000 of these pistols produced during its 24 year production run.
The overall condition is very good. Original nickel plate and blued finish. The action is excellent. The bore is a bit frosted with a spot of pitting. The rosewood grips are in good condition. Numbers match.
