RARE Antique J. STEVENS VERNIER New Model .22 S, L, LR Rimfire POCKET Rifle

Here we present an antique J. Stevens Arms Company Vernier New Model Pocket Rifle in .22, manufactured circa 1890 in Chicopee Falls. These were very similar to the Second Issue examples, except these guns featured a Vernier tang sight located on the backstrap. Only 1,500 of these “rifles” were produced between 1884 and 1896. This “pocket rifle” was considered one of the most accurate target pistols of the day and comes with an original attachable wire stock. In the 1880s, advertisements for these guns started to refer to them as “Bicycle Rifles”, likely as a marketing tactic to sell them to cyclists of that era, which was becoming extremely popular.
The overall condition is very good. Original blue and nickel finishes. The numbers on the barrel and frame match (10375), with the stock having a different number (10166). The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition, a bit frosted with nice rifling. The rosewood grips are in nice shape. A very neat little single shot “Pocket Rifle”!
